Now
repressed in digi-pak and available in limited numbers,
is amphbian's first album, In Pursuit Of Plankton.
Before 2003's 2-CD collection Adventures In Whistle
Viallage was released via Groovescooter, this magical
Plankton debut originally turned us on to the trio
of minimal moodsters known as amphibian. A serene and sometimes
surreal journey through an underwater world whereÊgentle
electronics merge with superb acoustics - double bass, piano/Wurlitzer
and a drum kit, bow and sway with manipulated field recordings.
New York's Steam called it "simple and beautiful",
while Tokyo's Metropolis said
it had "such depth and intelligence...
one might draw comparisons with DJ Shadow in his
more ethereal moments..."
Sydney's Revolver (now Brag) voted it one of their top 10
releases for 2001, while Time Off said: "Red Snapper
inspired jazz sounds... one of the finest albums to pass
our way in a long time." Chilled? Definitely. Haunting?
Yes. Like The Necks? Maybe in the hands of a strict
editor. Somewhere between ambient and jazz-groove, it's
the melodies of both the bass and piano, and the hypnotic
ambiences amphibian set up, that give these arrangements
such resonance.

by a young Friendly and Ali Omar (Atone)
respectively - it also features 'Holding Still',
'Yellohead', 'Oxygen Boy', 'Cut', 'Deeper

an early version of 'The Drowning Song' which Inga
has been performing live again lately, accompanied by a

The
2nd album from Sydney's own 'fun boy two', OLLO features
the single The Campaign For Real Bread (see
below for 7") and is released in Australia on Groovescooter
(followed by 12 Apostles around the globe). The If
If is like an hermetic iPod; mixing pop, dance,
electro and downbeat home listening. With both a unique
outsider's view of the world and a questioning plea from
within, the LP's personal core is brimming with crafty ideas,
smart programming, wit, insight, lovingly played instruments
and evocative lyrics. Guests include Rok Poshtya
(The Herd), Inga Liljestrom, FourPlay
cellist Peter Hollo, UK trumpeter Roger Mills
and Tooth's Kevin Purdy. Mixed with ex-UK
producer Mike Burnham (Mowax/Output
etc), it augments the fragmented vocal samples of Ollo's
debut LP Sleeper with a more fully-crafted
'song' approach, as songwriter Alex Crowfoot's
vocals imbue a greater portion of the swirling mix.
Also includes Ollo's reworking of Fun Boy 3's The
Lunatics (Have Taken Over The Asylum).

The
score to an imagined future, is now ready for download.
Don Meers'
4th release on Groovescooter Records is called 'Splint'
and finds Don building a sonic bridge between the frenetic
electro-jazz of his debut EP '4.30am', and the lush cinematics
of his much lauded longplayer 'Train Noise'. It's also Meers'
most personal audio journal to date. Split into two disctinct
'sides', 'Splint' tails Don's earlier outings like a spy,
craftily moving through numerous moods, whilst always staying
one step ahead of the listener. As always, those carefully
controlled atmospherics are bound together by strong melodic
threads, fusing his European leanings with '40s jazz,
back-alley electro-blues, warm acoustics, razor-sharp
electronics and a legion of samples. From deep space
ambiences, guitarscape instrumentals and noirish roadmovie
tales, through to sample heavy bop-beat-electro-jazz
and a surprisingly sad, stripped back closer. Including
collaborations with Martin Kennedy's All India
Radio, Inga Liljeström and Sloth,
plus a fresh vocal direction, 'Splint' finds this cinematic
maestro once again taking the listener on an imaginative
journey.

Imagine
BJöRK, PORTISHEAD + LAMB on the set of DAVID LYNCH
film.
ELK is a stunning, film-noirish journey from
singer/songwriter Inga Liljeström - the voice
behind Gerling's hit single Dust Me Selecta,
Hi-Fi Mike, Friendly, d.i.g. (Curveystrasse),
Itch-e & Scratch-e, Alien Headspace, ENS
and many others. Now the most distinctive voice floating
above Australia's musical landscape delivers her first
commercially available, full-length solo album. It's a
lush and beautifully cohesive, yet darkly fragile work
of immense proportions. That otherworldly quality fans
have always associated with Inga, reaches new heights
as her stunning lyrical images find wings to soar in a
fresh band-setting where talented players provide live
strings, contrabass, Moricone-esque guitar, fluglehorn/trumpet,
keyboards, samples and fractured beats. To say the result
is cinematic, is an exercise in understatement. "21st

Debut
album for Brisbane based digital-jazz artist Ens
[pron. 'enz']. With recent tracks on 'Evolutionary Vibes
5' and Tim Ritchie's 'Sound Quality 2',
plus various remixes doing the rounds and bending ears -
producer Ben Fairweather follows up with a longplayer
that both dazzles and lulls; dark and brooding, uplifting
and hypnotic. From the manic rhythm rush of 'All In The
Mood' (where drummer Billy Cobham meets his cyber
double) to the mesmerising beauty of surf-daybreak soundtrack
'Tranquilaise', Ens' dexterous programming is evident,
as is his unique sense of melodic juxtaposition. Featuring
interstate guests Sloth [ex-Meta Bass 'n' Breath]
and Andrew Day [Nightswimmer/Sound
Movement] plus vocalists Inga Liljeström
[Gerling/Friendly/Baggsmen] and Georgie
Zuzak, Ens has recontextualised his long distance
collaborators, manipulating their offerings in an exclusively
digital domain. The resulting output is an album of moodswings
that somehow manages to also sound organic and fluid. Somewhere
between the freeform hypnosis of perpetually unwinding jazz
and the brooding intent of downbeat electronics. As velvet
double bass strings slap against chrome plated electronics
and brushed rhythms, 'Warp and Weft' glistens from beginning
to end with hints of both the Ninja and Warp labels. Read
