Starring Robert Glasper and the soon-to-be-in-Australia Herbie Hancock alongside Lou Donaldson, Norah Jones, A Tribe Called Quest’s Ali Shaheed Muhammad, Wayne Shorter, Ambrose Akinmusire, Derrick Hodge, Keith Lewis, Kendrick Scott and many others, BLUE NOTE RECORDS: BEYOND THE NOTES explores the unique vision behind the iconic jazz label. Through current recording sessions between old and new vanguards and rare archival footage of cats like Miles Davis and John Coltrane, director Sophie Huber lays out the label’s story from past to the very present, illuminating the vital connections between jazz and hip-hop. Her filmed conversations between Blue Note artists also help chronicle the label’s mission, distinctive visual aesthetic, Black empowerment function, and the idea that music can be a transformative, revolutionary force.

One of the most important record labels in the history of jazz and contemporary African-American music, under the renewed leadership of Don Was (formerly of post-disco/new-wavers Was, Not Was) the label consistently pushes the envelope to work with new and innovative artists. Whether showcasing latter-day luminaries like Cassandra Wilson and Gregory Porter, or giving wings to remix projects by the likes of Madlib, DJ Spinna and J Dilla, Blue Note continues to rebirth the meaning of cool as well as jazz in the pursuit of musical freedom, fighting the good fight between art and commerce.
