Makes you want to travel back in time and give yourself the chance to have been there.” [Sun Burns Out]

“An ode to the unconventionality, spontaneity and vision of an extraordinary musician.” [ZFF]

Forming in 1968, innovative German group CAN are legendary for their motoric rhythms, improvisational approach to music, spearheading the genre known as Krautrock, influencing countless artists over the ensuing six decades and fusing avant-garde and jazz roots with psychedelic rock, funk, and musique concrète. Of course there’s also their back catalogue of venerated albums. In this intimate portrait,  the group’s timeless work and that of founding member Irmin Schmidt is examined through the keyboardist’s own eyes and ears. Via archive footage and interviews with Schmidt (as well as Brian Eno and filmmaker Wim Wenders – for whom Schmidt has composed soundtracks), the development of Can’s music, their collaborations with vocalists Malcolm Mooney and Japan’s Damo Suzuki, and their compositional approach is examined, alongside Can’s impact on future generations of musicians whose output spans pop to electronic-dance music. The film also charts Schmidt’s own journey from a childhood in Nazi Germany, through studying with Stockhausen and György Ligeti, to his ongoing work as a composer and conductor and his fondness for club music.
