Groovescooter and Eastside Radio‘s recurring music-meets-film night Cellar-uloid Sessions returns for 2013 with the local premiere of director Kieran Turner’s rockumentary Jobriath A.D. – the true story of the “true fairy of rock ‘n’ roll” glam. Fittingly, we’re camping out at The Oxford Hotel’s rather more velvety Gingers Bar this time and partnering with Queer Screen – for a tragicomic tale of one androgyne’s meteoric rise to obscurity.
Despite the massive billboards in Time Square, despite major label backing, despite a Cecil B. DeMillesque marketing plan, despite being hailed as The New David Bowie, it seems the world wasn’t ready for glam’s first openly-gay “lost god” Jobriath in 1973. Morrissey has long been singing Jobriath’s praises, others have been heavily influenced by this small-town Pennsylvanian escapee turned Hair-cast member turned Next Big Thing. Now Kieran Turner spotlights Jobriath’s unique life story, through his music, flamboyance, those costumes and that manager! Did he really end up living in a pyramid on the roof of the infamous Chelsea Hotel before he sadly died in 1983? Find out as Marc Almond [Soft Cell], DJ Ann Magnuson [N.Y.s Mudd Club], Gloria Jones [‘Tainted Love’], Jayne County [‘Are You Man Enough To Be A Woman’] and many others help tell the story along with some great footage.
