He’s worked with everyone from Pharoah Sanders and Sun Ra to John Zorn and Miriam Makeba, but Milford Graves is more than just a respected jazz drummer. Improviser, global-gatherer, martial-arts deviser, philosopher and avant- garde pioneer, his theories on timing, nature, dance and the human heartbeat (which he records and transforms into electronic music) are as progressive as his drumming. Oscillating from present to past, and weaving intimate glimpses of the artist’s complex cosmology together with live performances from around the globe, Milford Graves Full Mantis is cinema full of fluidity, taking us inside Graves’ mind and the essence of his music.
