★★★★ “A  fascinating portrait of the man, and of an era – a time in which a wildly successful entertainer had to be wary of wearing a polo neck sweater in public, for fear of inadvertently outing himself.” [The Guardian]

“A suitably expansive look at a giant talent.” [The Times]

“If anyone wants to take a mesmerising journey into matchless wit and style, watch Mad About the Boy” [The Independent]

“Everyone’s here and frightfully gay
Nobody cares what people say
Though the Riviera
Seems really much queerer
Than Rome at it’s height
Yesterday night
I went to a marvelous party”
[I Went To A Marvelous Party, lyrics by Noël Coward]

Debonair, witty, talented and so much more, playwright, composer, director, actor, and singer Noёl Coward was, as Time Magazine observed a queer mix of “cheek and chic, pose and poise”.

This fascinating documentary tells the remarkable story of the urbane multi-hyphenate, who became one of the biggest stars of his time all while keeping his sexuality a secret. Narrators Alan Cumming and Rupert Everett chronicle Coward’s rise to fame as well as the twists and turns that followed, including his stint as a secret agent. Featuring archived interviews with the droll raconteur, combined with home movie footage, this is a brilliant overview of a gay legend the likes of which the entertainment industry may never see again.
