After it’s Leicester Square World Premiere for the British Film Institute’s London Film Festival, RUDEBOY: The STORY Of TROJAN RECORDS now comes to Sydney for an exclusive premiere. With a cast featuring legendary artists MARCIA GRIFFITHS, PAULINE BLACK (The Selecter), LEE ‘SCRATCH’ PERRY, TOOTS HIBBERT, KEN BOOTHE, DAVE BARKER, DANDY LIVINGSTONE, DERRICK MORGAN, BUNNY LEE, LLOYD COXSONE, NEVILLE STAPLE, DON LETTS and others, this visually stunning musical account of Trojan’s history explores the power of music to break down cultural barriers and change lives.

At the heart of a cultural revolution which first unfolded on UK council estates and dance floors during the late 60’s and early 70’s, was the iconic Black music force known as Trojan. It was a label that provided much of the musical soundtrack inspiring a new generation and fuelling a love affair between Jamaican and British youth culture. Directed by natural storyteller NICOLAS JACK DAVIES, who has a reputation for highly cinematic, innovative and emotive work, the documentary begins with the development of the sound-system culture in Jamaica before exploring the growth of the island’s recording industry, which by the early 1960s gave birth to a new sound: ska. As the conflicting experiences of newly arrived Afro-Caribbean immigrants in the UK are highlighted, we relive the launch of Trojan Records and the effect its music had upon Britain’s white, predominantly working-class youths, who would soon be branded ‘skinheads’. Through the label’s growth from a small independent to a major player on the global music scene, also explored are its sudden and dramatic demise in 1975 and the subsequent revival, along with its continuing influence around the globe.
