“Superb cinematography…
a glorious and intimate experience” [The Canberra Times]

Dir: Philippa Bateman
Prod: Archie Roach AM, Kate Hodges, Philippa Bateman
Ex Prod: Ian Darling AO, Emma Donovan

Presented for one day only and with filmmaker Philippa Batemen on hand live in the cinema to answer your questions, this beautifully rendered film about the renowned First Nations singer/songwriter partnership of Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter is also a triumphant love story told through song. Revered both in Australia and internationally, in 2004 Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter held a series of performances which gave them a unique setting to tell their stories through spoken word and music. Called Kura Tungar — Songs from the River, the performances found them collaborating with Paul Grabowsky and the Australian Art Orchestra for some uniquely modern interpretations. The couple’s profoundly moving experiences about being stolen as children, finding each other and returning to Country, were also captured for the big screen and the result is this cinematic celebration of love, survival and triumph. Utilising footage that combines conversations, rehearsal preparations and the original concert’s opening night, the documentary also interweaves breathtaking images of Hunter’s Ngarrindjeri country in South Australia. The result is a genuinely moving portrait of an incredible partnership and two beloved artists, exploring their music, its meaning and the significance of truly coming ‘home’

So come and celebrate NAIDOC Week with us, knowing that a portion of all ticket sales from this special screening are being donated directly to the Aboriginal Legal Service of NSW/ACT and if you missed the original concerts you’ll get to understand why the original Kura Tungar production received a rapturous standing ovation and took out the Helpmann Award for the Best Contemporary Australian Concert.
