An emotional rollercoaster of laughs and tears — the unforgettable journey of the Conway Brothers. From the humble days of the Jellybean Jug Band to the wild success of the iconic Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band, this passionate story weaves through careers, loves, struggles, friendships, family bonds, and musical triumphs. A tribute to creativity, resilience, and the magic of brotherhood — it’s a tale as quirky and heartfelt as the music itself.

Brothers Mic and Jim Conway have been making music together since their school days, when they formed the Jellybean Jug Band—a humble beginning that evolved into the wildly popular and unforgettable Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band. In the early 1970s, Captain Matchbox became a national phenomenon, captivating audiences with their energetic renditions of My Canary Has Circles Under His Eyes, Fats Waller classics, and eccentric originals like Wangaratta Wahine.

Mic’s lifelong love of vaudeville, circus, and DIY instrument-making has shaped a remarkable career across numerous bands and genres, always blending performance, humour, and showmanship. Jim, a blues purist, carved out his legacy as one of Australia’s premier harmonica players, with roots planted firmly in the Captain Matchbox days.

Through present-day interviews and rich archival footage, Whoopee Blues chronicles the highs, lows, and laughs of the Conway brothers’ musical journey. It’s a celebration of their enduring bond, their creative spirit, and their unique contribution to the story of Australian music.
