Back on the big screen for it’s 40th Anniversary, director/producer Charlie Ahearn‘s 1983 cult-classic film WILD STYLE was the first hip hop motion picture made, authentically capturing the atmosphere of the early days of hip hop in New York. It includes appearances by seminal figures such as Fab Five Freddy, Lady Pink, The Rock Steady Crew, The Cold Crush Brothers, Queen Lisa Lee of Zulu Nation, Grandmaster Flash and Zephyr. Culminating in a giant hip hop gig in a Lower East Side band shell, the drama revolves around a teenaged underground Bronx graffiti artist named Raymond (aka “Zoro” – played by actor/artitst Lee Quiñones). Zoro is at odds with the now “legitimate” Union Crew, who have turned their talents to commissioned murals and attracted the attention of  journalist Virginia (played by Patti Astor) who is trying to bring uptown hip-hop culture to the downtown art world. Along the way are encounters with graffiti artists, rappers and breakers.

“Indisputably the most important hip hop movie, ever.” [David Mattin, BBC]
