Felix: Dare To Dream is an inspiring portrait of defiance, creativity, and the pursuit of freedom. It explores the extraordinary life of Felix Leu – artist, pioneer of modern tattooing, and patriarch of one of the world’s most respected tattoo dynasties.
The son of artist Eva Aeppli and raised in the creative orbit of Jean Tinguely, Felix grew up immersed in Paris’s vibrant 1960s art scene before embracing the ideals of the Beat Generation and the global counterculture movement. In New York, he met Loretta, his lifelong partner, and together they chose a nomadic existence, raising four children while rejecting convention and valuing time, creativity, and personal freedom above material wealth.
Guided by Loretta’s reflections, the film traces their remarkable journey through hardship, love, artistic exploration, and unwavering independence. In the late 1970s, Felix discovered tattooing—initially as a way to fund their travels, and ultimately as the medium through which he would leave an enduring legacy by founding the legendary Leu Family.
More than a documentary about tattooing, Felix: Dare To Dream is a moving meditation on identity, family, artistic expression, and the courage to live life on your own terms.
