An intimate love letter to the power of music and the written word, winner of a special jury award at SXSW, Matty Wishnow’s The Last Critic tells the story of Robert Christgau, the self-styled “dean of American rock critics.” As music editor of New York’s Village Voice for decades, Christgau almost single-handedly invented rock criticism as we know it. His pithy putdowns of hated albums became legendary, but his love of music poured off the page and his eclectic, open-minded taste shaped generations of fans and musicians.

Featuring interviews with Randy Newman, Boots Riley, Thurston Moore and the crotchety critic himself—still obsessively writing at 83, surrounded by his jaw-dropping vinyl and CD collections—The Last Critic is as unapologetically nerdy and passionate as its subject.
